Dr. Esquenazi, is a highly accomplished ophthalmologist, sub-specialist in cornea, cataract and refractive surgery, with more than 20 years experience in providing examination, diagnosis, and treatment for the full range of medical and surgical conditions affecting the anterior segment of the eye. Specializing in corneal wound healing following surgery, Dr. Esquenazi will research, develop and implement the latest practices in refractive surgery as well as work to maximize the quality of a patient’s surgical outcome.
Prior to his tenure as an ophthalmologist in South Florida, Dr. Esquenazi was appointed Research Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology and Neuroscience at Louisiana State University in 2004. Continuing to maintain laboratory privileges at the renowned LSU’s Eye Center, Dr. Esquenazi, in addition to his capacity as physician and surgeon, will continue to conduct scientific and clinical research, translating and applying his findings to benefit his practice in South Florida.
Applying his academic knowledge, patient experience and clinical research as principal investigator of a grant awarded by the Centers of Biomedical Research Excellence funded by National Institute of Health and National Eye Institute through 2010, Dr. Esquenazi plans to enhance the academic arena and continue to publish a variety of medical journal articles.
Originally from Colombia, Dr. Esquenazi, in 1994, founded the Olsabe Laser Center in Bogota, where he served as medical director until 2002. Seeing as many as 70 to 80 patients a day and performing as many as 2000 laser vision correction surgeries each year, Dr. Esquenazi has combined his passion for providing best possible vision with his dedication to the latest in academic research to build and grow a respectable private practice, further solidifying his efficacy in providing quality patient care.
Obtaining his medical degree in Bogota, Colombia from Colegio Mayor de Nuestra Señora del Rosario in 1984, Dr. Esquenazi completed his internship at Hospital San Jose and went on to obtain his residency in Ophthalmology from the Barraquer Institute of America, where he worked very closely with Dr. Jose Barraquer, the father of modern refractive surgery. Completing a second internship in internal medicine at the Ochsner Clinic Foundation and a second residence in ophthalmology at Louisiana State University New Orleans, Dr. Esquenazi merged clinical training, academic activities, and research opportunities while attending the internationally recognized LSU-Ochsner residency program in ophthalmology. Finally, he completed a fellowship in cornea, cataract, and laser refractive surgery under the supervision of the world renowned professor Herbert Kaufman in New Orleans.
Well recognized for his academic appointments, accolades, innumerable published papers and memberships in American Academy of Ophthalmology, American Medical Association, American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology as well as American Society of Ophthalmology and Optometry, Very recently on November 4 2016, Dr Esquenazi received the Chancellor’s Award and Lecture from the Louisiana State University Neuroscience Center of Excellence for “ His outstanding academic leadership and key contributions to our understanding of corneal wound healing and the establishment of transitional corneal research”. Dr. Esquenazi’s extensive and highly specialized background will enable him to maintain and enhanceﾠ his contributions to the field of ophthalmology.
A resident and prominent member of the Aventura community in Florida, Dr. Esquenazi is married and a proud father of 3 children.
Dr. Gary Shienbaum is a South Florida native and a Phi Kappa Phi and Cum Laude graduate of the University of Florida. He received his Doctor of Medicine degree Summa Cum Laude from Jefferson Medical College of Thomas Jefferson University, where he was elected to the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society. He performed his medical internship at Albert Einstein Medical Center and his ophthalmology residency at the prestigious Wills Eye Institute in Philadelphia, Pa. He then completed a two-year fellowship in vitreoretinal diseases and surgery at the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute in Miami, Fla.
Dr. Shienbaum is a Diplomate of the American Board of Ophthalmology. He is an active member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the American Society of Retina Specialists, the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology, the Miami Ophthalmological Society, and the American Medical Association.
Dr. Shienbaum’s clinical interests include advanced treatments for diabetic retinopathy, age-related macular degeneration, macular hole, macular pucker, retinal vascular disease, retinal detachment, complications of cataract surgery, and ocular infection and inflammation. He has authored numerous scientific peer-reviewed publications on vitreoretinal diseases and has presented his research at both local and national meetings.
Dr Dan Georgescu is a board-certified ophthalmologist and fellow of the American Society of Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery and the American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery. He specializes in the cosmetic and reconstructive surgery of the eyelids (blepharoplasty), brows (browlift) and face (midface, lower face and neck-lift) as well as facial esthetics (Botox and fillers). He is also an expert in orbital (around the eyes) and lacrimal (tearing) surgery.
After completing medical school in Europe and graduate school at Yale University and UT Southwestern Medical Center, Dr Georgescu trained as an Ophthalmologist at Moran Eye Center, University of Utah. Following a 2 year fellowship in Oculo-facial Plastic Surgery at the Center for Facial Appearances with Dr Richard Anderson, the most sought-after fellowship training in the country, Dr Georgescu became a Professor of Oculo-facial Plastic Surgery at the Johns Hopkins Medical Center, the # 1 ranked US Hospital 12 years in a row.
Dr Georgescu is the author of many scientific articles and book-chapters in the field of cosmetic and reconstructive facial plastic surgery and has trained residents and young doctors for over 8 years.
Dr. Georgescu also enjoys doing many outdoors activities with his wife Monica, traveling and singing in opera choir. His most recent performance in San Sebastian, Spain with the renowned Romanian tenor Theodor Ilincai in Puccini’s Tosca was a great success.
Dr. Cortes is a Diplomate of the American Board of Ophthalmology and an active member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology. Dr. Cortes’s clinical interests include surgical treatments for glaucoma such as modern laser and filter surgery, tubes and advanced procedures of minimally invasive surgery such as Endocyclo-laser-photocoagulation (ECP), Glaukos trabecular micro bypass stent and ExPress shunt.
Dr. Cortes is fluent in Spanish and an active member of the South Florida community where he has provided compassionate and high quality services for nearly 20 years.
